While Republicans and most Tea Party Conservatives are rejoicing over Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts (even I can spell it), we might want to ask ourselves just what kind of a victory was it? Scott Brown is not as conservative as all the hype has led us to believe. He supported the Massachusetts version of government run health care, he is a pro-choice advocate, and he is a gay rights supporter. This could mean big trouble for the right to life and religious freedom.
Will we finally end up with a new health care bill that will pay for abortions? Will Brown be the 50th vote that the Dems need to defeat the Defense of Marriage Act or to pass a stronger hate crimes bill? Have we traded fiscal responsibility for the even more important moral issues? Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, our churches need to continue praying for this nation while we still have the freedom to do so.
