Matthew 2:1-2

The Need for Worship

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

We have an old saying that says, "History repeats itself." Does it really repeat itself or is it arranged in some poetic order by a master writer? There was a town of Bethlehem in Galilee seven miles northwest of Nazareth. Jesus could have been born there, but He was born in Bethlehem of Judaea (Judah). This is the place where His ancestors made history. Ruth made her new life with Boaz, David was born there and was anointed king of Israel there. Bethlehem, which means the House of Bread, was also the birth place for the only begotten Son of God, who called Himself the Bread of Life.

Bethlehem is where the King of Kings and Lord of Lords took on the form of the lowly babe in a manger. The date was recorded only as "in the days of Herod the king." His birth, totally unnoticed except by the angels of heaven and a few shepherd boys, would forever change the history and the future of the world .

Jesus and His family stayed in Bethlehem for nearly two years. While news of His birth was softly circulated throughout the land, there seems to have been little attention paid to Him, until the visit from the Magi. Here again the poetic nature of history is evident. The Jews paid Him little attention, but these wealthy Gentiles traveled many hundreds of miles to find Him. The Jews did not understand the word of God, but the Gentiles recognized the signs of His coming and called Him "King of the Jews". Later, Jesus would offer salvation to all the nations of the world.

Why would Gentiles come to visit the King of the Jews? They came to worship Him. They were led by God to that place for that reason, and they were guided afterward by God who showed the way to safely return home.

We can see from this story that even idolaters, magicians, or sorcerers, whatever their name implies, can be called and used by God. When such men repent and commit themselves to following God's guidance, they find true peace and eternal security through His Son Jesus Christ.

All that they need is to worship Him. They crave worship, they leave their comfort zones to worship, and they are even willing to travel many miles to worship the King. Through worship, they can fulfill all the plans that God has for them. Through submission to His will, they can be a part of His historical poetic masterpiece.

Before The Throne:

Dear readers, will you allow God to use you, like that star in the east, to lead others to worship the Savior Jesus Christ? You are the light of the world. Ask God to make your light shine. Serving Him through worship and obedience should be all you need, as you participates in the fulfillment of the Bible's final chapters. Pray about these things.
